Client Income Generating Activities (CIGAS)
Background
Nancy Wambui Kamau, a 52-year-old mother of two, embodies resilience, courage, and the transformative power of empowerment. Her journey reflects the impact of determination and support in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
Facing Adversity
In 2006, Nancy found herself struggling with the dual challenges of being widowed and living with HIV. Life was difficult and uncertain—until she joined the Karai Support Group, an integral part of ASN Upendo Village. Within this safe community, Nancy not only received emotional support but also gained practical skills in positive living, nutrition, behavior change, and income generation.
A Turning Point: The Gift of a Dairy Goat
In 2008, Nancy received a dairy goat from ASN Upendo Village. This simple but life-changing gift became a catalyst for transformation.
Growing Livelihoods
Nancy later sold some of the male kids and bought three sheep (two survived and thrived). She gradually expanded her herd of goats and sheep, selling them periodically to sustain her household. For example, during ASN Upendo Village’s 20th anniversary celebrations, she proudly sold three healthy male goats back to the organization.
Her business approach became clear: buy goats and sheep, fatten them, and sell at a higher price. This enabled her to pay her children’s school fees, provide food for her family, and steadily improve her living conditions.
Multiplying Benefits
Beyond income and nutrition, Nancy also benefited from the manure her livestock produced. This natural fertilizer enriched her farm, boosted productivity, and allowed her to grow enough for her family and sell surplus produce for extra income.
A Story of Transformation
Today, Nancy stands as a shining example of resilience and empowerment. From hardship and despair, she has built a sustainable livelihood, supported her family, and gained independence.
She is deeply grateful to ASN Upendo Village for the support she received—including the dairy goat, monthly nutrition supplements, and continuous empowerment programs.
Looking Ahead
Nancy’s journey shows that with the right support, people can break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-reliance. It is the hope of ASN Upendo Village that more clients, like Nancy, continue to be empowered to transform their lives and create brighter futures.
