Social Welfare Program
Selina Wanjiku Wangui is a bright and resilient 10-year-old girl whose story reflects the power of compassion, medical support, and community care.
She is the third-born child of the late John Muhia and Joyce Wangui Ng’ethe, who both succumbed to AIDS in December 2015 and March 2016 respectively. Selina’s older siblings are Ranice Wambui (16 years) and Valentine Maina (14 years) — the latter is currently sponsored by ASN Upendo Village.
When their parents passed away, the three siblings had no stable home. Their aunt brought them from Molo and left them at their grandparents’ home. Their grandfather, Samuel, was already overwhelmed, caring for his wife who was battling dementia, alongside his orphaned grandchildren. Both Ranice and Selina were HIV positive and urgently needed ARVs.
When ASN Upendo Village met the family in March 2021, Selina was only six years old and weighed just 11 kilograms. During a home visit, the team realized that her grandfather could not adequately care for her due to his own challenges and the condition of his wife. The situation grew more difficult after the grandmother passed away a few months later.
In 2023, Selina underwent foot surgery since she couldn’t stand or walk. The Social Welfare team at ASN Upendo Village stepped in to support her recovery journey. They provided the family with food supplements, facilitated medical referrals, and began physiotherapy sessions for Selina, both at home and later at AIC Kijabe Hospital, where she successfully completed twelve sessions.
After months of care, Selina showed remarkable improvement — she was finally able to stand and began using a walker. Her one-year journey on a wheelchair was filled with hope and progress. In 2023, she was admitted to Ol Kalou Disabled Children’s Home, where she continues to receive education and care. Today, Selina is in Grade Two and attends school using walking aids.
Her grandfather, Samuel, expresses deep gratitude to ASN Upendo Village for the support that has transformed their lives — including a dairy goat, a water tank, and ongoing assistance with nutrition, education, and medical care for the children.
Selina’s story is a touching example of how holistic empowerment — through health, education, and compassion — can give hope and dignity to even the most vulnerable.
